The New York Times reported today that new science has revealed some interesting theories on why exercise builds new brain cells. A compound called bone-morphogenetic protein (BMP) is found throughout the body and is thought to impede the growth of new cells.

The brain is packed with valuable stem-cells that can be converted into fresh new neurons, however as the body ages, more BMP gets in the way. While the exact mechanism is not known, exercise clearly counteracts this bad-guy protein and allows us to build more brain cells, which in turn provides the foundation for higher intelligence, learning, and the ability to change your brain mapping.

The study also indicates that the exercise required to see a difference is minimal. Soft exercise, such as pedaling on the FitDesk is perfect to maintain a better body, and a smarter, happier brain!
