How can something so obvious, important, and easy be missed? In 18 months of searching the web for articles on how to get and stay fit very few mention what is the key. Use the thing you want to do to motivate you to complete the thing you need to do. In short what is it that you do everyday that can also bring fitness in your life ?(I will keep this clean).
First we can point out the things we want to do. For millions of Americans that would be Facebook, email, web surfing, etc… So fact is we all love to get on our computer. There is something about the web, email, texting this whole wired world is just plain captivating. This fact alone could be drawn out into a continuous blog in itself. So lets just agree we love to get on the web…daily.
Second, video games are captivating and time consuming. Some will argue that we should reduce the time we spend playing them. Others will not play them at all. What matters for this topic is that if we could many would play them more often and longer.
Third, planning, organizing files and computer maintenance are important and time consuming. This is a necessary and basic part of our wonderfully productive modern lives. The less you do it the more you have to play catch up down the road. So plan for it.
Above are three common “wants” for our daily lives. They are all consistently needed and for the most part enjoyable and/or productive. So what is it that so many bloggers are missing?
With all good intention the exercise community is genuinely wanting to help people get exercising. But the truth is getting people to exercise is hard enough, keeping people exercising is even harder. What is missing is that most advise comes in the form of another boring exercise routine, expensive gym class, or complicated – stress inducing equipment that rarely gets used more then 3 months. These ways of exercise are effective but they apparently are hard to maintain. Hence the millions who “ used to workout”. Additionally the word “workout” generally means High intensity. What is missing is the simple concept of putting your laptop, cell phone, book or video game controller in your hand while you exercise. I am typing this article now while I exercise. I set the stopwatch, put my laptop on my FitDesk and now 20 minutes later I have completed my exercise (@ 91 bpm) and wrote my first blog post. I hope you enjoyed my viewpoint. With my new found time to write/exercise I will continue to share my thoughts with you and hope you tell me what’s on your mind too.
